Galadriel_in_Rivendell_by_Niraven

I walk into the audition room and am invited to sit across the desk from the casting director.  They look me up and down, lean in and out. “Ooooooooooooo.  You’re interesting.  You look like you could have just come straight out of Middle Earth.”

Stopwatch 4

12:00 – I plan my escape.  I’m at work on a sunny afternoon.

Two days before I submit to a casting call.  The next day they reply with the offer of an audition.  The casting session is the following day from 12-2.  I have to work, but it just so happens that my lunch break is from 12:15-1.  Perfect!  Time is tight, and the location is several major blocks away, but I love a good challenge.  I decide to go for it.

My morning walk down into the studio district for an audition.  What a beautiful day!

I wish I could tell you all more about the auditions I get sent on.  Sadly, though necessarily, I’ve been sworn to silence on most of it.  You see, everything in this business is confidential.  I’m not allowed to share any details of the scripts I read.  I can’t give the names of any of the companies I’m auditioning for.  My agent doesn’t even like me to say what kind of audition I’m going for on a given day (fast food, financial services product, tv role, etc.).

If you’ve been following along, you know that a couple of weeks ago, while trying out for a role, I was told that I was too fat.  I found this funny.  (While not exactly a stick, I am pretty slim.)  I later started to feel almost angry about this.  A few days later, I decided I’d show them just how phat I really am.  I did something I haven’t done in a while.  I applied for a bunch of modelling gigs.  And would you know it?  I booked three of them!  THREE.  So all I have to say now is: “Thanks for the lemons, Jerk!”  My modelling career has never been hotter!  😉

Don’t worry folks.  Before you think that I’m curled up in my Spanx crying into my Ben & Jerry’s Bacon Cheeseburger ice cream researching Gastric Bypass, rest assured; I’m not.  My shape-wear is tucked away securely in my underwear drawer, there’s no such thing as Bacon Cheeseburger ice cream (yet.  Ben, Jerry, call me.  The first one’s free.), and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let anyone make me think that I’m fat.  What DID I do?  I laughed.  I laughed, and I laughed, and I laughed.  Then I shook my head.

I felt for the guy.  He seemed new.  He pulled out his short resume and headed into the audition room with that fresh, glisteningly hopeful look in his eyes.  We were auditioning for the same piece, a gender-neutral spot in a commercial.  He was scheduled in ahead of me, and as the casting room was not quite sound proof, I could hear his performance from the holding area.  His voice was a bit pitchy, and as he got about halfway through, he stopped, apologized, and asked if he could do it again.  He was clearly nervous.  He tries again.  A few seconds in, another apology as he cuts it short.  I cringe as I wait for casting to excuse him.  But instead the casting director gently tells him to breathe, and asks if he could try it again.  He is glad to be given the chance, takes a minute, and begins anew.  Five times the casting director asks him to run his piece.  I’ve never seen anyone be given five passes.  Not once does he make it.

Happy Belated Birthday!

It was my Birthday a couple of weeks ago.  The acting universe has just given me a little present.  For the first time I’ve been offered two auditions on the same day at the same casting studio!  I’ve had two auditions on the same day before, but never at the same studio.  That was pretty cool.  It means they like me, and they trust me.  A vote of confidence.  I’m a firm believer in celebrating the small victories, as they help fuel you for the challenges ahead.

It’s a good day.
